Bronze Age

LONGHOUSES WITH LOWERED FLOORS

A study sheds light on settlements and daily life at the end of the Danish Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age (2350-1600 BC)

The study is based on new finds from settlements with longhouses with sunken floors in the eastern half. The houses have been found in large numbers, especially near the Limfjord. In many cases, the floors are so well preserved that they can be seen as “fossils” – here are tools, macrofossils and traces of activities exactly where the inhabitants of the houses left them thousands of years ago.

The floors hold great promise for researching the activities of daily life.

The study looks at the structure of dwellings, activity zones and the specialization of households in different “occupations”. The goal is to gain knowledge about people’s living conditions during the period.

The most important contribution of the study is new knowledge about the unique architecture of the longhouses and about everyday activities in the households.
