The future of Museum Salling

The future of Museum Salling

The decision is firm, but the dialog is open

We are grateful for the support and understanding that the new course with Skive Art Museum is met with among employees, the museum’s guests and the outside world. The process is well underway and is receiving support and positive attention from partners. However, we also recognize that there are strong emotions at play.

In any organization, there will be times when decisions are made that don’t sit well with everyone. Our decision to transform Skive Museum into a unique art museum, and to present cultural heritage and archaeology at other visitor sites in Skive Municipality, has drawn sustained criticism from a small group who have publicly expressed their concerns. The board has followed the debate closely and we respect and appreciate the commitment and deep feelings behind these frustrations.

Four critics have now organized a protest meeting on Thursday 12 September at 19.00 at Skive Museum under the heading “Let Skive Museum remain”. Skive Museum is happy to open its doors for the meeting, but we, the board of Museum Salling, see no point in attending ourselves. Because the decision will not be reversed.

However, this does not mean that we are not open to dialog. Quite the contrary. Because we also stand by our commitment to ensure that the new direction is carried out in a way that is meaningful and beneficial to the museum’s visitors, employees and stakeholders. We believe that cultural heritage and archaeology concerns the whole of Skive Municipality and can be communicated throughout Skive Municipality – even though the Skive region has historically been used to the primary communication taking place in Skive city.

Therefore, we would like to continue the dialog with relevant associations about constructive solutions that meet the concerns that may exist about Museum Salling’s dissemination of cultural heritage and archaeology. We want to talk about the future and find common solutions where possible. We see much more sense in that.

However, we want to be absolutely clear: The decision to transform Skive Museum into Skive Kunstmuseum as of January 1, 2025 stands. The decision was made by a completely unanimous board after careful consideration, extensive analysis and with the long-term health and success of Museum Salling in mind, and we look forward to sharing our cultural heritage in new and exciting ways.
